What Is a Bay Window?

Bay windows and bow windows combine several smaller windows to create one large window installation. The key difference between the two: Bay windows utilize three windows installed to create a trapezoidal shape, while bow windows may use up to six windows.

Most bay windows feature three windows, including a larger middle picture window, with two matching windows, or “flankers,” on either side. Most commonly, the flanker windows protrude out at a roughly 45-degree angle and are about half the width of the center windows. Double-hung or casement windows are a popular choice for flankers.

This type of window is most identified with Victorian architecture. Yet, bay windows can be designed to match nearly any home type, from a Craftsman bungalow, to a classic Colonial.

Ultimately, bay windows should be custom built for the size of the window opening. A properly-sized bay window is important for sturdiness and durability, as improperly sized bays will bend and sag away from the home over time.

Common Uses for Bay Windows

Considering a bay window for your home? This type of window has many uses. A new bay window can help add:

  • Architectural Interest – Bay windows project out from the home, creating a distinctive look from both the interior and exterior.
  • Natural Lighting – Bay windows maximize the brightness and natural light in any interior space.
  • Added Space – Bay windows make interior spaces feel larger, and can also accommodate a window seat, additional shelving or a storage nook.
  • Ventilation – Bay windows allow for great breezes, which is why they’re a popular choice for living rooms and bedrooms.

Advantages of Bay Windows

There are numerous reasons you might install a bay window on your home. From boosting the visual appeal, to increasing resale value, here are a few reasons to consider a custom bay window:

  • Make a Design Statement – Bay windows are one of the most beautiful types of window installations.
  • Accentuate a View – A bay window creates the best frame for a view, while drawing in natural light and a breeze.
  • Additional Space – Bay windows tend to create more space than a bow window, and can instantly make a room look and feel larger.
  • Add Value to a Home – Bay windows increase square footage, while also adding visual appeal, both of which increase resale value.

Disadvantages of Bay Windows

Bay windows are a popular choice for many reasons, and they work well for nearly any interior space. Yet, there are a few disadvantages that might make this the wrong type of window for your home. They include:

  • Too Much Natural Light – When installed in the wrong space or without the right features, a bay window can allow in too much light, resulting in overheating or faded furniture. One solution: High-performance solar glass to reduce heat gain.
  • Cost Effectiveness – A properly constructed bay window is essential for long-term performance and structural soundness. That’s why low-budget options should be avoided.
